Loneliness in Working Life (5th International Loneliness Symposium)
Loneliness has remained a significant phenomenon throughout human history in both its individual and social dimensions. In modern society, however, loneliness has become a more visible and profound issue due to changing lifestyles, digitalization, transformations in working life, and increasing individual disconnection. Especially in working life, loneliness has emerged as a new risk factor that directly affects individuals’ psycho-emotional health, productivity, and sense of social belonging. In contemporary societies, the high levels of loneliness experienced by individuals in their family lives and social environments have also become frequently observed in working life. While a new structure of the self is being shaped through competition, selfishness, and narcissistic tendencies in the workplace, the phenomenon of workplace loneliness deepens and increasingly affects individuals. In addition, developments in communication networks that have accelerated with globalization, along with the living conditions brought about by modern urban life, have intensified the feeling of loneliness at work. Thus, how does this situation affect employees in the workplace? Which professional groups experience loneliness more intensely? To what extent do employees in different countries experience loneliness?
In this context, the 5th International Loneliness Symposium, organized under the leadership of Üsküdar University on December 16, 2023, was held with the theme “Loneliness in Working Life.” This book presents the academic papers and essays that were delivered at the symposium in compiled form. The volume includes interdisciplinary studies that address the concept of loneliness through different professional groups, cultural contexts, and social processes.
